* Restructuring Educational Facilities in Leon County (FL) School District

iconThe UW Center for Architecture and Education asked Emily Millet and Jim Croteau to begin a dialog about restructuring school facilities to meet the needs of school populations in rapidly changing circumstances. Their article includes a selection of documents outlining policy issues that schools and districts must include in the planning process.

In a related story, the Seattle Times recently featured an article on the design of River Ridge High School: State of the art school design attempts to enhance learning, not just house it.

*Seven Characteristics of Highly Effective Adult Learning Programs
icon We opened our Lifelong Learning floor this month with an article by New Horizons Advisory Council member Dorothy Billington. In an age of scarce resources and rapid change, her research shows that there are some effective ways to structure adult learning programs. She identifies the factors that best facilitate adult growth and development in adult learning environments.
*Recreating Schools for All Children
icon Veteran principal John Morefield outlines twelve characteristics of schools that work for all children. Morefield has traveled extensively researching schools and programs that work. He bases his thesis on his work with students and parents at his own school, on Effective Schools research and on the research of James Comer, Hank Levin, Bob Slavin and others. His article opens a Building floor devoted to information about Restructuring Education. He is Principal of Hawthorne Elementary School in Seattle, Washington and on several advisory boards, including that of Powerful Schools and New Horizons for Learning. His article opens the Restructuring Education floor.
* Lessons from an Inuit Community on Baffin Island
Ellen Weber is an adjunct professor at McGill University in Toronto. She shares her story of eighteen months spent teaching and learning from Inuit teachers on Baffin Island. "Through my Inuit students' lives and our work together, I experienced how environment shapes and colors human learning." Her story inspiring story opens a new Building floor focused on Multicultural Education.
*7 Principles of Learning: Challenging Fundamental Assumptions
icon The Institute for Research on Learning has contributed a thought provoking piece for the 21st Century Learning Initative. The IRL's research suggests that learning is inseparable from engagement in the world, and intellect is inseparable from experience.
