Proceed With Passion: Engaging Students in Meaningful Education
by Paul Cummins with Anna Cummins and Emily Cummins
Red Hen Press, 2004
ISBN: 1-888996-80-3

This is a bold, thought-provoking book about the current plight of education and what to do about it. Cummins discusses the critical role of education not only in relation to the fullest possible development of the individual but also in relation to our cultural and political worlds. He describes current problems in the teaching (or lack thereof) of social studies, the devastating effects of the decline of the arts in education, and the current horrors of over-testing. Not content with decrying current problems, he is doing something positive. Beginning his book with describing how to engage students in the adventure of learning, he concludes with a description of his New Roads School and an Educational Village that is being planned. This is an illuminating book that bears study and rereading, as well as exploring the numerous references he cites throughout.
