Description * Amateur Radio Emergency Service, *ARES is a volunteer alliance of licensed radio amateurs who voluntarily register their qualifications and equipment for communications duty and who plan and train to serve the public when disaster strikes. This unit, Milw-ARES, serves Milwaukie, Jennings Lodge, Johnson City, Oak Grove, Oak Lodge, and other areas of NW Clackamas County from the Multnomah County line south to Gladstone, from the Willamette River to I-205, (essentially within the 97222 and 97267 zip codes, plus portions of 97202 south of the county line and 97266 west of I-205; click on those links to drill down to see if you live within our area). That just shows the area we serve; you're free to choose whichever ARES unit you wish to participate with. */Milw-ARES/* //is a subordinate unit to Clackamas ARES . Every U.S. licensed amateur operator, with or without membership in the ARRL or any other local or national organization, is eligible for ARES membership. The only qualification, other than possession of an Amateur Radio license, is a sincere desire to serve. Because ARES is an amateur service, only amateurs are eligible for membership. The possession of emergency powered equipment is desirable, but is not a requirement for membership. However, federal regulations and other requirements may necessitate specific training over and above that required for an amateur license. Training Want to become an amateur radio operator ('ham')? Click here for information on study and testing. In addition to the free training for hams offered at most Clackamas ARES meetings, on-line courses are available.
