Reaching Teenagers Through Science Fiction
Our lives are now science fiction. We program infants with Baby Einstein, Mozart, and Galileo DVDs, and we teach one-year-olds to communicate by sign language with baby genius flash cards (Meet the Fockers). Most kids 8 to 18 have the following media devices in their bedrooms (Keyser Family Foundation Survey): CD/tape player, radio, TV, VCR/DVD. How can we use these mediums to interest more kids and teens in Science Fiction literature?

Magic in Literature does it lighten the reality of Magic
Magic has been around since the dawn of time. People have worshiped different deities and unusual things of a magical nature have happened and do happen daily. Presenting and moderating -or- How to give good panel
Good panels, bad panels -- what makes them work or fail, and how best to give the audience what they came for. And get them coming back again when they see your name on the schedule. Whether it's your first convention as a panelist or your hundredth, there's always something new to learn about how to get -- and keep -- audience attention. In this intro to paneling workshop, I'll go over the basics of what I've learned over decades of presenting about how to get up on stage and be a compelling speaker, entertain and educate the audience, develop a fan following, and start a religion. (Or at least end the panel without too much embarrassment.) I'll also go over the basics of moderating and cover the biggest problems in keeping audience attention. Technology and the science fiction community share a symbiotic relationship. Today's technologists often look to SF writers for inspiration in developing tomorrow's electronic wonders. Similarly, SF creators often seek out the latest trends in science and engineering for story ideas. This presentation will use science fiction stories-art-cinema as a guide to predict achievable technology of the future. But wait, there's more! Viewpoints from the leaders of today's electronic, cryptographic and semiconductor (think ""nanotech"" and beyond) industries will be also be presented. After the Nuclear War
Iran versus Israel? North Korea versus Japan? Will some central Asian dictator decide to go out with a bang in the face of democratic street protests? Small nuclear war seems a lot more likely in coming decades. How will the world cope: with pre-emptive strikes (conventional or otherwise)? Anti-missile defenses? Or will we be buying personal decontamination units of some kind

The Return of the Hero
An end of the flawed hero and the rebirth of Myth in film, television, and graphic literature. All our heroes have grown dark. As global events grew more and more catastrophic, the need for a hero to fix things, regardless of the cost, rose up to keep us safe. Yet, we did nothing but create a spandex-clad Frankenstein’s Monster… Caring little for the innocent and ignoring the hope, hope that we bestowed upon them. Yet, the trend on the horizon of all popular media, from film to comics, is revealing that the public is again crying out for the ideal hero. While there will always be a place for Batman, the world needs Superman. We no longer wish to observe the sad fall of Anakin Skywalker; instead, we demand the redemptive powers of his son, Luke. We are tired of watching and reading the tarnished exploits of our heroes when we, ourselves, live in a world of grays. Our panel will bring to light to returning trend of the pure hero… From all angles of popular media, but with a strong focus on Film and Television .

Chocolate Auction
What the heck is a Chocolate Auction? Orycon will host a Volunteer Auction and the bidding will all be done in Special Chocolate! 'Okay', you say 'where do I get all this chocolate? Can I just bring my own?' Well of course not how would our Charities benefit from that? We will have a special chocolate available for sale at Orycon. The pieces will sell for 1.00 each piece. If you eat it you can’t bid with it so be sure to buy extra for yourself. Now the way this works is like any other servitude auction. You bid against each other using the chocolate instead of funny money. What you are bidding for is to spend an hour in public space with a volunteer. You can talk, dance, or anything else that is not considered illegal. The whole point of this auction is to raise some funds for our Charities and to offer you the convention member an opportunity to meet new people and perhaps to see the con with a new perspective. This is a fun activity that allows participants to potentially see a different side of fandom. This year one half the money collected will go to the Endeavour Awards and the other half will go into an account to be used to bid to bring the 2011 Worldcon to the Pacific Northwest. Both our charities are non-profits and a letter for tax purposes can be made available.

Anxious to Please: 7 Revolutionary Practices for the Chronically Nice
Imagine a condition that affects a huge portion of the population, a condition that causes severe anxiety and depression, cripples self-esteem, and undermines and destroys relationships. The condition described here is not drug addiction, schizophrenia, or a career in politics. It is chronic Niceness. This workshop examines the underlying psychological and cultural dynamics that have created an epidemic of Nice People, women and men who have great difficulty pursuing what they want, who are struggling to find an assertive strength that they can integrate with compassion. This workshop offers seven revolutionary practices for transforming the anxiety that permeates the emotions and relationships of the Nice Person. These practices are practical and designed for use in a person’s daily life. They promote a happy and calm emotional life, a greater sense of self-esteem, and healthy, soulful relationships.
