Lesson #23 - A Choice of Lessons

A note from the website author:

You, the coach, have a choice of two lessons this week. The first is the original lesson 23: adding and subtracting like factors. The second lesson is an introduction to Cartesian coordinates.
In a review I performed of WSMC Math Olympiad problem sets from 2008 - 2017, I noted that there was a heavy emphasis in the geometry problems on problems involving Cartesian coordinates. A Cartesian coordinate problem was included in EVERY geometry problem set for that 10-year period! It therefore seemed that we should provide an introduction to Cartesian coordinates in our 5th grade math program. This is it.

This lesson is an adaptation of the Cartesian coordinate 6th grade lesson 20. It removes the Pythagorean theorem part of that lesson and adds a 'complete the parallelogram' problem set. Basically how to find the 4th point of a parallelogram given the other 3 points, a problem that shows up repeatedly in the 5th grade Olympiad problems.
