Hands-on math!

Program Limitations

  • No Interactivity
There is no interactivity in our materials.

  • Limited graphics
There is little use of color or advanced graphics. Most figures are minimal line diagrams.

  • Website not designed for student use
Unlike most of the math websites out there (and there are a lot of them!) this website is not designed to be directly used by the student. This is a coach's website, intended to provide source materials and instruction to allow the coach to teach math to 5th and 6th graders. That doesn't mean that students are prohibited from using the site, but it doesn't provide any 'feedback' to them. That's the coach's job.

  • Not geared to winning the WSMC Math Olympiad
A student proficient in the materials presented here can compete and do well in the Washington State Math Olympiad but don't expect any wins. To win that competition would require a different focus than ours. Our program is geared to the average student with one hour of math team per week. This is not a program for gifted kids! Winning teams practice continuously through the academic year and are generally limited to the top 5% of students. That isn't our focus. We want to bring math to the average student or even a below average student that is willing to put in the effort. We have seen below average students 'catch fire' with this program. That's what this is about.
