SECOND YEAR CURRICULUM
These lessons build on concepts introduced in the first year program.
They presume that the student is already capable at computing with
fractions and decimals and with the area formulas for rectangles,
triangles, and circles. New concepts covered here include exponents,
the Pythagorean theorem, rules of algebra, and volumes of
solids. Free weeks are included so as to provide some schedule slack.
The subjects presented in those weeks are optional extras. Free week #2
is scheduled to precede the Holiday break, so as to provide a light, fun
lesson for kids when they are preoccupied with Holiday arrangements. All
free week lessons can slide forward or backward at the discretion of the
coach.
Sixth graders who are doing math team for the first time, may find that
they are in the minority in the year 1 program. If this causes a serious
problem for the student, they can consider (at the discretion of the
coaches) transferring from Year 1 to Year 2 beginning with lesson 7.
