Problem
Solution
1) Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones have decided to separate their property by placing a fence along the property line. They ordered enough fence posts so that the fence would have posts placed 8 feet apart. However, five of the posts were not usable. They were still able to put the fence up by placing the remaining posts 10 feet apart. How many fence posts did they originally order? Let n = the number of original fence posts and
f = the total length of the fence.
This is a 2 equations with 2 unknowns problem.
  1. The equation for the original fence is:
        f = (n - 1) x 8
    You subtract 1 because there is one more fence post on the end.
  2. The equation for the second fence is:
        f = (n - 6) x 10
  3. Substituting the first equation into the second:
        (n - 1) x 8 = (n - 6) x 10
        8n - 8 = 10n - 60
        -2n = -60 + 8 = -52
        n = 26
They originally ordered 26 posts.
2) Kate creates a new sequence of numbers: 2, 3, 5, 25, 200 .... After the first three terms, 2, 3, and 5, each new term is found by adding the first two of three previous terms and then multiplying this sum by the final previous term. For example, the fourth terms is (2+3)(5) = 25. Now, Carrie uses Kate's technique but starts with new terms (a, 4, 6) to create a new sequence: a, 4, 6, (a+4)(6), ..... If the fifth term of Carrie's sequence is 300, what is the fourth terms of Carrie's sequence? Calling the first 3 terms a,b, and c, the first 5 terms of Kate's sequence are:
    a   b   c     (a+b) c     (b + c) (a + b)c
So, with the new terms a, 4, 6, the 5th term is
    (4+6) ((a+4)6) = 300
    (10)(6a+24) = 300
    60a + 240 = 300
    60a = 60
    a = 1
Therefore, the 4th term of Kate's sequence is
    (a+4)6 = 5x6 = 30

3) Mina's current cell phone plan costs $29.99 a month plus $0.029 a minute. She is thinking about changing to a new plan that costs $49.99 a month but doesn't charge anything per minute. How many minutes can she talk per month on her current plan to break even with the second plan? Round your answer to the nearest minute. Using m for the number of minutes, set the 2 expressions equal to each other:
    $29.99 + $0.029 m = $49.99
    $0.029 m = $49.99 - $29.99 = $20
    m = $20 / $0.029 = 689.66 rounded = 690 minutes
4) The first three of a sequence of growing dot figures is shown. If the sequence continues in the growing pattern, how many dots would be in the 100th figure?
Use n for the figure number.
  1. Every figure has 1 dot on top
  2. The number of dots remaining after you subtract that 1 dot are:
        1, 4, 9 which is n2
  3. The equation for the number of dots in the nth figure is:
        n2 + 1
  4. The 100th figure has 1002 + 1 = 10000 + 1 = 10001
5) Carlos is training for a down hill run. He has several friends timing at different spots along the trail and they all start their watches at the same time on a signal when he starts his descent. The table shows the results of Carlos' elevation in feet versus time in seconds and it turns out the data is linear. How high up to the nearest foot was Carlos when he started his descent?
  1. The equation of a line is y = mx + b, where:
        b is the y intercept and m is the slope.
  2. In our equation the independent variable (x) is time and the dependent variable (y) is elevation
  3. Use any 2 points to compute the slope:
        m = change in y (elevation) / change in x (time) =
        m = (865 - 1057) / 15 - 7) = -192/8 =
        -24 feet/second
  4. Since we are looking for the elevation at time = 0, that is the y-intercept. We need to solve for the y-intercept, which is:
        y = mx + b
        b = y - mx for any time point.
  5. Using the first time point (7 seconds):
        b = 1057 +24x7 = 1057 + 168 = 1225 ft.
