1) In 3 more years, Miguel's grandfather will be six times as old as Miguel was last year. When
Miguel's present age is added to his grandfather's present age, the total is 68. How old is Miguel now? |
Use M for Miguel and F for his grandfather.
1. Write the equation for "In 3 more years, Miguel's grandfather will be six times as old as Miguel was last year" =
    3 + F = 6(M - 1)
2. Write the equation for "Miguel's present age is added to his grandfatherls present age, the total is 68"
    M + F = 68
3. Turn the first equation around to make it an equation for F:
    F = 6M - 9
4. Put this expression for F in the second equation and solve for M:
    M + (6M - 9) = 68
    7M = 77
    M = 11

2) If 2 apples weigh as much as 3 apricots, and 2 apricots weigh as much as 50 grapes, how many
apples weigh as much as 300 grapes? |
Work this problem backwards.
1. One apricot weighs as much as 25 grapes.
2. One apple weighs as much as 1.5 apricots
3. One apple weighs as much as 37.5 grapes
4. Divide 300 by 37.5 to get the number of apples = 8

3) An art teacher plans to teach her class a new drawing technique. She needs one sheet of paper for
herself for demonstration purposes, and two sheets of practice paper per student. Complete the table below for 20 students, 25 students, and write an expression for s students that represents this situation. Include all 3 answers on your answer sheet. |
1. If there are 2 sheets for every student and one for herself,
    then a class of 20 students + herself requires 41 sheets.
2. Use this to compute the number of sheets for 25 students =
    25 x 2 + 1 = 51
3. Write the expression for
    "two times the students plus 1" = 2s + 1
