Solution
1) Ryder is building a square fence around his house. The base of his house is 20 ft wide and 24 ft long. If Ryder wants his house to be centered within the fence and he uses 136 ft of fencing, how close will each side of his house be to the fence? 1. Compute the length of one side of the square given its perimeter =
    136/4 = 34 ft.
2. Compute the distance from one edge of the long dimension of the house (24 ft) to the fence when its centered =
    (34 - 24)/2 = 10/2 = 5 ft.
3. Compute the distance from one edge of the short dimension of the house (20 ft) to the fence when its centered =
    (34 - 20)/2 = 14/2 = 7 ft.
4. The distance of the house from each side of the house is
5 ft and 7 ft. The accompanying image shows the geometry.

2) Lana is reading a book for a class assignment. She can read 3 pages every 4 minutes. She starts reading at 4:15 pm. If the book is 126 pages long, when is the earliest she would finish reading the book?
1. Compute the rate in pages per hour that Lana reads =
    3 pages/4 min = (3 pages/4 min) x 60 min/hr = 45 pages/hour.
2. Using the length of the book, compute how many hours she needs to read it =
    126/45 = 2 hours 48 min.
3. Add this to 4:15 to get the earliest finish time =
    4:15 + 2:48 = 6:63 = 7:03 pm
3) What is the volume of a cubic box with a side length of 19 cm?   19 x 19 x 19 = 6859 cu. cm.

4) Sam rides a taxi to the airport. The total distance traveled is 23 1/2 miles. If the fare is $5.25 for the first 5 miles and 10 cents for each additional 1/4 mile, how much is the total fare?
1. Subtract 5 miles from the total taxi distance =
    23 1/2 - 5 = 18 1/2 miles.
2. Compute the number of 1/4th miles in this distance = 74.
3. Multiply this number of quarter miles by 10 cents =
    74 x $0.10 = $7.40.
4. Add the cost of the first 5 miles to get the total cost =
    $5.25 + $7:40 = $12.65.

5) Four boys went fishing and each caught one fish. Jim's fish was 1 1/4 ft long. Chris's fish was 13 inches long. Wan's fish was 1 1/3 ft long. Brian's fish was 15 inches long. Who caught the longest fish?
1. Convert all lengths to inches =

Jim's: 15 in., Chris': 13 in., Wan's: 16 in., Brian's: 15 in.

2. The longest fish was Wan's fish.
