2016 Grade 6 Probability & Statistics

Problem
Solution
1) Find the median and mode of the following set of test scores:
    78, 83, 86, 79, 59, 83, 80, 98, 77, 83, 80, 86
1. Since there are 12 scores, the median will be the average of the middle 2.
Use the cross-out method to find these 2 scores and average them =
    (83 + 80)/2 = 81.5
2. The most common score is 83
2) A 52-card deck has 4 kings in the deck. What is the probability of randomly drawing a king out of the deck? Divide the number of kings by the number of cards in the deck = 4/52 = 1/13
3) Dimitri is dressing for a job interview. He has 5 shirts, 4 pairs of pants, and 8 ties. Assuming he wears one of each, how many different outfits could Dimitri wear to his interview? Multiply the number of each article of clothing to get the number of combinations = 5 x 4 x 8 = 160
4) A coin is tossed 8 times. What is the probability that the next time the coin is tossed the result will be heads?
(Express as a percentage.)
Big hint: what has happened in the past has no bearing on what will happen in the future!
    Probability = 1/2 = 50%
5) Find the probability of rolling a sum of 1 or a sum of 13 with two dice. (dice have 6 sides numbered 1-6) The dice have numbers from 1 to 6 and you are rolling 2 of them. The probability of a 1 or a 13 is 0
You can't roll a 1 (min = 2) or a 13 (max = 12)
