Solution
1) It takes 4 workers 5 hours to build 6 structures. At this rate, how long will it take 2 workers to build 9 structures?
  1. Compute the total number of hours to do 1 job:
        4x5 = 313 hours/structure
          6
  2. The number of hours to make 9 structures is:
        9 x 313 = 30 hours.
  3. Divide this by the number of workers = 30/2 =
        15 hours
2) A coat is priced at $155. In January, the style seems popular so the store raises the price by 20%. Unfortunately, the coat does not sell at that price. In April, the price is reduced by 20%. What is the price of the coat after this? A price raise of 20% is a multiply of the original price by 1.2
A price reduction of 20% is a multiply of the original price by (1 - 0.2) = 0.8
  1. Coat price after price raise = $155 x 1.2 = $186
  2. Coat price after 20% reduction = $186 x 0.8 = $148.80
3) A rectangular box has a surface area of 94 square inches and a volume of 60 cubic inches. A new box is made that is a scaled up version of this original box. The new box has a surface area of 376 square inches. What is the volume of the new box?
  1. Assume the box is a cube. Compute the length of a side as the square root of the total surface area / 6
    (because there are 6 sides) :
        s = √ 94/6 = 3.958 inches (approx)
  2. Compute the length of a side of the larger cube :
        s = √ 376/6 = 7.916 inches (approx)
  3. Compute the ratio of these side lengths and cube it:
        ratio = (7.916/3.958)2 = 23 = 8
  4. Multiply the original volume by this ratio:
        new volume = 60 x 8 = 480 cubic inches

4) Celena is traveling home from a friend's house. She starts on her bike and travels 12 miles per hour for 5 miles. After getting a flat tire, she walks and pushes her bike 12 mile for 14 hour. Then her dad picks her up and drives the remaining 6 miles home at 18 miles per hour. What is Celena's average speed for the whole trip?
  • Compute the total time for the trip:
    1. First leg: 5 mi. ÷ 12 mi/hr = 5/12 hr = 25 min.
    2. Second leg: 14 hour = 15 min.
    3. Third leg: 6 mi. ÷ 18 mi/hr = 6/18 hr = 20 min.
    4. Total time = 25+15+20 = 60 min.
  • Now compute the total distance traveled:
    1. First leg: 5 miles
    2. Second leg: 12 mile
    3. Third leg: 6 miles
    4. Total distance: 11.5 miles
Average speed = 11.5 mi./60 min = 11.5 mi/hr
5) Ayomide is buying fancy napkins for his restaurant. The Pantry sells 1300 napkins for $160.81. K Supplies sells 241 napkins for $29.76, and Target charges $18.57 for 150 napkins. Which is the better buy? Compute the cost per napkin for each option:
  • Pantry: $160.81/1300 = 12.37 cents/napkin
  • K Supplies: $29.76/241 = 12.348 cents/napkin
  • Target: $18.57/150 = 12.38 cents/napkin
The cheapest is K Supplies
