Sol Bianca Dub Review
After a bit while ADV dubbed the rest of their stuff, the first Sol Bianca episode has been redone. How is it? Well...
Script:
For the most part, the original script has been kept. ADV has modified a few bits, most likely for better fit into English. There haven't been that many changes--people that have watched it enough times to make web pages(Ed: err, heh heh...)will notice a few minor discrepancies. (ADV apparently feels more of the miscellaneous items/vehicles should have a name, and Janny's "Rendezvous Beacon Catch!" has been changed) Probably the most irritating part is that ADV has apparently decided that silence is not golden--several bits that were quiet(cuz they were in space) have had cheesy sound-effects added to them. These gave the original a bit of character, IMHO. But the rest of the effects are OK; however they lack some of the bass hit of the original.
Acting:Acting is surprisingly good, with only one or two voices sounding bad. Janny's voice is tomboyish(can't tell if the VA is the same one that does Kome from Blue Seed), June comes across as the airhead, and April is portrayed well. Batros doesn't have the same "evil" quality in his voice, but there are few people that can match Takeshi Aono.
Probably my most quibble in this department is that Feb's voice and portrayal is way-off mark. The actor sounds like Selma on "The Simpsons" with husky voice and all, and acts a good bit like her as well. She comes across as being somewhat petty and is not portrayed as mysteriously/usually in control as she was in Japanese. Rim's voice is very off--it sounds a lot like a woman lowering her register(it's not) and not paying attention; it doesn't work at all and makes him sound more like a Macek character.
Overall:It's not a series-destroying dub. If you want to show SB to a friend that hates subs, this wouldn't make your hair stand on end. But I'd like ADV to get a better voice for Feb and cut it out with the excessive sound FX for SB2.
