22 July 2003: "Endex for the Distasteful Duo?"

The WaPo (among others) reports that Saddam's sons Uday and Qusay have been killed in a firefight with US troops in Mosul. Well, I can only hope it really is them, but for the time being I'm going to hold my jubilation in check.

The reason for this is that Lt.Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, in his press conference on the raid, was more than a little evasive about the degree of certainty behind this claim.

Q: General, could you tell us whether the tests on the two bodies that you said belong to Qusay and Uday are positive?

Sanchez: We are currently continuing to exploit the site, and we continue to investigate the elements that were recovered from the scene.
That's as may be, but it doesn't answer the question. "Yes," "no," or "we're waiting for the lab to get back to us" would be answers. "We are continuing to search the building" is not.
Q: General, Sayid Selau (sp) from Al-Arabia. How come you confirmed that it's Uday and Qusay, Saddam Hussein's sons, was there?

Sanchez: Because we're fairly -- we're certain that Uday and Qusay were killed today.
Uh, yeah. Bit of circular reasoning there, but fortunately the next guy is on it:
Q: Could you be more specific, though, sir? Jeffrey Kaufman, ABC News. Could you be more specific? How were you able to make a positive identification?

Sanchez: We have had -- we've used multiple sources to identify the individuals.
These "multiple sources" are not specified.

Frankly, in the course of this war and subsequent operations, I've heard a few too many reports which turned out to be incorrect, despite the professed degree of certainty. If Uday and Qusay have indeed been corpsed, well, good; I hope it hurt. But I'm waiting for the DNA test results before I start cheering.
