19 August 2003: "Bombing in Baghdad"

The first news I read this morning was about the bombing of the UN building in Baghdad. As if that wasn't bad enough, I read that Sérgio Vieira de Mello had been killed in the attack; indeed, that he had possibly been the primary target. By all accounts, he was a good guy, who'd devoted a fair chunk of his life to making the world a better place. I'm having difficulty getting my head around the fact that anyone would want to kill someone like him. In my particular case, I'd been reading UNHCR documents with his name on them dating back over a decade by now, and it's hard to accept that a life like that can be snuffed out so easily.

It's a sad day indeed, and whoever carried out this attack has not done the people of Iraq any favours.

If you read my stuff, chances are you don't read Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler; I don't usually, but I thought I'd see if there had been any reaction. There was, and it was one of celebration:

I heard this on the news this morning and had almost popped the cork off of a bottle of sparkly when I heard that it was the U.N. HQ in Baghdad.

Oh well, it's a start, I suppose.
Seventeen people are dead, and "Emperor Misha I" reckons "it's a start." But that doesn't mean he condones terrorism, you understand. Well, from my perspective, reading the comments section for that entry is like watching that footage of Palestinians celebrating in the streets in reaction to the 9-11 attacks. What hacks me off is that I actually checked with a faint hope in my heart that maybe, just maybe, the right-wing goons who post there wouldn't revert to type, that maybe they'd show a little compassion. I'm disappointed, but not surprised, that this was a vain hope. Now if you'll excuse me, I feel the urge to vomit and then take a shower.
