Character Advancement

Brownie Points are the lifeblood of Freeform Characters. You get Brownie Points by doing things that the DM wants you to do. You also get Brownie Points by adding Quirks to your Character. You receive Brownie Points instantly, and likewise spend them instantly. Doing stupid or uncool things get you negative Brownie Points. One negative Brownie Point will take away one positive Brownie Point. If your Brownie Points drop below zero, the DM may do things to you that you may not like. If your Brownie Points drop below -5, you might end up in an Unreal Place the next time you enter Rainbow-Mist. If your Brownie Points drop below -10, the Rainbow-Mist will come for you (time to make a new Character).

If, during the course of a Campaign, you would like a new Slot, it will cost you ten Brownie Points to get it. This new Slot will come to you the next time you enter Rainbow-Mist. Filling this new Slot need not to be immediate, but must also be done in Rainbow-Mist. You immediately gain an additional Health Level for this Slot.

Making a Demi-God is not easy. First, your Character must have more than nine Slots. Then, you must get the Niftiness Immortality (if you don't already have it). Lastly, you have to act Demi-God-like. What do Demi-Gods act like? Ask them and they might tell you. Characters may have more than nine Slots if they are not Demi-Gods, but those Characters may not have Immortality.

If your Demi-God has more than nineteen Slots, your Demi-God may enter full godhood. Get the Niftiness Divinity (if you don't already have it). Characters may have more than nineteen Slots if they are not Gods, but those Characters may not have Divinity.

You may drop Niftinesses. But, you must also drop any Slots (and corresponding Health Levels) that Niftiness fills, and you must spend 5 Brownie Points per Slot to do so. Additionally, you must be in Rainbow-Mist to do this. Gods that drop Divinity are no longer Gods. Demi-Gods that drop Immortality are no longer Demi-Gods. Dropping a Bogusness without harming any other Slots costs 20 Brownie Points per Slot that Bogusness gave you.

When in the course of Character events, it becomes necessary to improve a Niftiness, you may take a Master Level. The process is this: you must first play your Niftiness in the Campaign, then you drop it and its Slot(s), and get the Master Level Niftiness at double the Slot cost of the Niftiness. If you do not have enough empty Slots to take the Master Level, you cannot have the Master Level Niftiness. As with all major Character modifications, taking a Master Level requires that you be in Rainbow-Mist.

Grand Master Level is ultimate achievement in a Niftiness. Twice as expensive as a Master Level Niftiness, it is costly, but attainable. When buying a Grand Master Level simply repeat the procedure for attaining Master Level.
