Corsa
dei Ceri, Gubbio (Umbria)Faith and folklore motivate these "Ceraioli" to herculean feats of endurance as they race up the face of Mt. Ingino burdened by one of the 400Kg. statues (literally "candles") of the patron saints of Gubbio. Similar scenes occur annually on May 15, the feast day of St. Ubaldo, the warrior bishop of the city. Gubbio, one of the most interesting and best preserved medieval cities of central Umbria, is known for its magnificient Palazzo Pubblico, and characteristic ceramics. |
