Hints and Solutions

These are WSMC Olympiad problem sets with provided hints and solutions for all of the 5th and 6th grade problem sets from 2006 thru 2017. With the provided hints, these become easier problems, putting the student on the correct path to the solution. For many students, just knowing how to address the problem is a major hurdle. The provided solutions show not only the correct solution, but how it is determined, step at a time. If there are multiple ways to solve a particular problem, all solutions are provided.
References to lessons, definitions and tutorials are also provided.
- Suggestions for Classroom Use.
We have given some thought as to how these problems, hints and solutions could be used in a Math Team free week exercise or practice competition. Keep in mind, these are only suggestions.
- Math Olympiad Common Problem Types.
In compiling these problems, we have noted that certain types of problems show up over and over. This is a growing list. If your use of these materials is limited, we would suggest these types of problems because of the high probability of them showing up in future olympiads.
- WSMC Olympiad Problems Errata.
In compiling these problems, hints and solutions, a number of errors were noted in the original WSMC problem sets. The problems you see in this list have been corrected.
Note to coaches: I have provided multiple methods of solution for many of these problems where I could identify them. Fifth grade 2008 measurement problem #1 has 4 solutions! For many of these problems there may be more solutions. We always encourage students to find different ways to solve problems. A note about the subject titles: The names of the subjects in the Olympiad have changed over the years. Algebra became "expressions and equations". Measurement became "ratios and proportional relationships", and so on. I have decided to standardize the subject names to the ones you see here to avoid confusion. Also, professionals refer to these subjects by the names I give here (I am one of these professionals) , so I have decided to standardize on the industry names for them.
